Ras Baalbak Joins Racist Municipalities In Issuing “Curfew” For Syrian Residents

We woke up to the disgustingly racist news of Ras Baalback’s municipality joining those of Nahr Ibrahim, Zgharta-Ehden, and many others in imposing low wages and curfews on Syrian residents and migrant workers in the town.

A statement was published yesterday on the municipality’s official Facebook Page announcing that Syrian workers’ daily wages would be set at 40,000 LL per day, while female domestic workers are to be compensated 10,000 LL per hour.

And if the grossly unfair wages were not enough, the statement also forbade Syrian residents from roaming the village streets between 7PM and 6AM and from hosting guests in their homes during nighttime.

This is not the first or last time a Lebanese municipality issues racist decisions targeting Syrians and foreigners as the country continues to grapple with overlapping economic, political, and social issues. For things to change, we must adopt a unified labor contract for all workers and work on raising awareness on issues of racism and discrimination.
