Al Omari Mosque

Originally the Crusader Cathedral of St. John (1113 – 1115 A.D.), the building was transformed into the city’s Grand Mosque by the Mamlukes in 1291.

A mosque or masjid is a place of worship for followers of Islam. The Arabic word masjid literally means a place of prostration. The word “mosque” in English refers to all types of buildings dedicated for Islamic worship. The mosque serves as a place where Muslims can come together for salat (prayer) as well as a center for information, education, and dispute settlement. The Imam leads the prayer.
