Since its creation in 2006, the Lebanese association for art house cinemas, Metropolis, aims to defend and promote Cinema by presenting it in its different genres, eras and tendencies.
The Metropolis Association, now associated to the Empire Circuit, welcomes its fervent public in its new location in the Metropolis Empire Sofil Theater in Ashrafieh, at the heart of Beirut. It is keen on developing the patrimonial cinema by presenting retrospectives of the complete works of film masters Michelangelo Antonioni (April 2009), Jacques Tati (May 2010) and Werner Herzog (May 2011), among many others. Metropolis Cinema also offers regularly a selection of the best international films by organizing reruns of films presented in prestigious festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival, with a Retrospective of the 40 years of Cannes’ Directors Fortnight (September 2008) and an annual rerun of the official competition of the Cannes’ Critics Week (Yearly in July since 2006).
The Metropolis Association has teamed up with prestigious institutions: the French cultural channel ARTE has displayed the finest of its recent productions (Every two years in October since 2007). It welcomes the main cinematographic events in Lebanon which are The Cinema Days of Beirut, The European Film Festival, Docudays and the Beyrouth International Film Festival.
But it also instigates its own events like the first animation film festival in Lebanon, Beirut Animated (November 2009 and May 2011), and cine-concerts like Faust by F.W. Murnau, interpreted by Rami and Bachar Khalife (November 2008).
