France, 1550. Philibert is a strapping young lad of twenty, the eldest son of an artichoke grower. He sets himself apart from the other young men of his village by his purity and idealism. On his deathbed, his father tells Philibert that he is in fact the son of the nobleman Fulgence Bérendourt de Saint-Avoise, who was cruelly assassinated by a Burgundian with a port-wine stain on his neck. Laden with idealistic notions and artichokes, Philibert leaves his home village and sets out for Burgundy, accompanied by his faithful servant Martin. Philibert’s courage, chastity and kindness will be sorely tested by the adventures that lie in store for him...
