This session focuses on stories related to colonialism or contemporary spaces that seem inhabited by ghostly presences. Cécile Hartmann films a construction site in Dubai. Chia-Wei Hsu films his grandmother in the port of Taiwan’s ‘Hoping Island’ on the island of Keelung, under Japanese occupation before the handover of the island to Taiwan. Based on memories of a missionary doctor in the early 20th Century and contemporary photographs taken at the border region of British India and Afghanistan, Miranda Pennel evokes colonial conflicts. Her film plays sound against image to draw the portraits of the protagonists. In 2011, Roy Samaha and a friend followed in the footsteps of James Bruce on the Nile from Alexandria to Aswan, while the events of the Egyptian revolution unfold.
