Christian Merlhiot, filmmaker, co-director of the ‘Pavillon Neuflize OBC – Creative Laboratory’ at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and founder of the collective pointligneplan. He will step in on questions related to new issues in the field of the moving image, as well as artists’ accompaniment, and problems of presenting artworks.
‘‘In relation with two exhibitions held in Paris, a recent one entitled «This & Here» («Ça & Là») gathering 75 artists from the Pavillon Neuflize OBC, and the other one starting in June, «The Making of Films» («La Fabrique des films») including works by 18 filmmakers members of pointligneplan, we will question some tangible shiftings related to visibility of contemporary works and images’’. This session presents different contemporary uses of film footage and film references. Reinterpreted and reconstructed materials, both a reflection on the cinema and a search for visual artists. Anne Katrine Senstad is projecting colored light on the building of the Donal Judd museum in Marfa, Texas. Fred Worden explores cinematic movement and the position of the viewer’s gaze, from a scene from the film «Possessed» by Clarence Brown in 1931. Georg Tiller recreates shot by shot a scene of Bergman’s film, «Hour of the Wolf». Volker Schreiner compiles objects and words in pairs. Eli Cortiñas Hidalgo deals with the construction of female identity by highlighting one of the classic scenic elements. Hisham Bizri proposes a visual meditation from film footages of the Egyptian-Syrian singer Asmahan. Soren Thilo Funder makes Egyptian actors play dialogues and scenes from Hollywood disaster movie. Raed Yassin indirectly draws a portrait of the ousted President Hosni Mubarak using images of Egyptian cinema of the past thirty years. In The Dream and The Lie, Anna Ogden Smith looks at how VHS archives operate as a filtering process of the memory.
