Tired of media’s air brushed models and pop-star divas, with plastic cleavage a la Haifa Wehbe? Convinced that advances in science and medicine should be used to their full potential? What about the real consequences on women’s psyches and career prospects, the ones you can’t so obviously grasp? Lebanon’s first and exclusive screening of award winning documentary Miss Representation, delves into the very subject matter and is open to the public. The film, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, exposes mainstream media’s contribution to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in the U.S. and throughout the globe. While women have made strides in leadership throughout the world over the past few decades, the U.S. is 90th in the world in terms of women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating. Meanwhile, in Lebanon, one out of 3 women are estimated to go under the knife, while Lebanon’s four female MPs represent only 3.1 percent of parliament’s seats, one of the region’s lowest rates.
