Employee Rights Trampled, Spinneys Protest Ensues

Protester turned street reporter @1mazenkhaled tweeted these shots of the Spinneys protest, happening now in Achrafieh, along with the words “dancing and partying with intermittent slogans, the same ones on the signs. Army is just watching, surrounding.”

Spinneys has reportedly infringed upon workers’ rights, and a group of them have decided to take matters into their own hands. This past July, workers established the Spinneys Workers Union in Lebanon at the Ministry of Labor. Thus far, Spinneys management has been less than happy with the union’s formation, dismissing four employees for their union activities.

Workers and supporters have taken to the streets, protesting directly in front of the Spinneys Achrafieh branch. Signs declaring “Ya Jreisati protect us from all the thugs around us” are currently being lifted in anger as the protest continues this evening. A supermarket chain that is estimated to rank in a nine-figure mark of profit this year alone, Spinneys has trespassed on civil rights by punishing workers involved in unions, a clear over-step of their legal authority.

Spinneys’ actions are a far cry from their 64th anniversary video evidently celebrating and supporting Spinneys’ workers. Just not their rights.
