Al Madina Theatre hosts the collective performance “Salome versus Bluebeard” directed and choreographed by Cornelia Krafft.

A combination of Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” and “Ariane and Bluebeard” by Maurice Maeterlink, the performance intends to explore the crucial theme of the suppressed female, male perceptions, and the impact of power that we still carry until today.

The ensemble of professional and amateur Lebanese performers (of ages between 18‐ 38) carries this two‐plot‐performance that reflects women’s plight. Salome’s virginity and her desire for more power over both her stepfather and Saint Jokanaan lead her, in the end, to fatal revenge. In parallel, Ariane’s fight for freedom stands for women’s historic battle for equality. The mute dance performance of these two plays will question why the inequality of the sexes is still upheld, and portray the lack of objection to this suppression by some of the oppressed females.
