Lebanese Couple Signs Civil Marriage Contract

♪ “Here comes the bride…we’ve got no idea what religion she is” ♫

Okay so maybe Kholoud Succariyeh is veiled….so I guess it’s safe to assume she’s Muslim. But that’s besides the point! She and her new husband, Nidal Darwish, were reported by NOW Lebanon to have gone out of their way to be one of the first civilly wed couples in Lebanon, making sure that their religion in no way, shape, or form defined their marriage.

They signed their civil marriage contract—which made no mention of their sects—on November 10, 2012, and are now awaiting an official announcement from the Consultations Committee at the Ministry of the Interior.

So let us all offer an absolutely gigantic congratulations to a momentous couple in Lebanese history—who, even though they were of the same religion—went to great lengths to see that their religion was not the defining factor of their relationship. Here’s hoping that Lebanon makes this example a permanent occurence.

Because love knows no bounds.
