Five Songs That Should Be On Your Valentine’s Day Playlist

So you’ve lit the candles, laid out a blanket on the floor, popped open your most expensive bottle of wine and cooked your better half a dinner that’s only partially burned.

You’ve planned the night down to the minute, and your “romance and/or seduce” game plan is foolproof. It’s 7:58. She/He’ll arrive at any moment. And then suddenly, you realize you’ve forgotten the mood music.

Your mind is racing; what to do? Should you stick on the cheesy “1980’s Romance Ballads” CD your buddies bought you as a prank gift? Should you play the “Most Recently Played” playlist on your iPod, even though you know it’s filled with hard rock and screamo?

My friends, Beirut.com has got your back. We bring to you a list of the five songs that should be on your playlist. Play these, and we guarantee a night that beats Danny Zuko and Sandy’s romance right out of their hopeless devotion.

These are songs that put the “awww” in awesome.

1. “Longest Time” – Billy Joel

Can you say “d’awww”? This song is probably the only instance in which it’s not horridly cheesy to rent an a-capella band. An oldie but a goodie, this 1984 ballad’s romantic moxie is timeless. Without fail, “I think you ought to know that I intend to hold you for the longest time” makes the romantic inside me squeal like a school girl. Repeat every time.

2. “I Wanna Grow Old With You” – Adam Sandler

I don’t care what you say. I know full well that the moment Drew Barrymore realized that it was Adam Sandler’s voice over the intercom, you shed a tear. I mean, what were the odds that they’d be in the same plane to Vegas anyway? Every girl’s dream, this song will score you many, many points. Whip out the guitar and sing it yourself, and you won’t even have to splurge on that expensive diamond necklace.

3. “Marry You” – Bruno Mars

Planning on being totally cliche and proposing to your better half on Valentine’s Day? Well if you’re going to do it, go big or go home. Take a leaf out of this guy’s book and go all out in an elaborately planned lip-dub to Bruno Mars. Trust me, she’ll say yes.

4. “I Won’t Give Up” – Jason Mraz

Admittedly, this song makes me cry a bit. And the lyrics may or may not be about his fiance leaving him. Still! In just four minutes, Jason Mraz (yet again) manages to encompass everything so utterly heart-wrenching about love in a song.

5. “Julie” – Take That

This is the kind of song that plays at the happy ending of a cheesy romcom. The sort of song that John Cusack blasts from a boombox outside your window or while Patrick Dempsey whisks you off on a lawnmower. Play this for your girlfriend, and let Mark Owen’s fantabulous voice “sha la la la la” her off her feet.
