Discussion with Charbel Nahas at Nasawiya Cafe

Monday, Feb 11, 2013
6:00pm -> 8:00pm
Nasawiya Cafe

Join the Anti-Racism Movement (ARM)’s fourth information session with former Minister of Labor Dr. Charbel Nahas, who will speak about the sponsorship system. This system, which governs the relationship between employers and migrant domestic workers (MDWs), renders MDWs vulnerable to abuse and exploitation and then traps workers in these abusive situations.

Dr. Nahas argues that there is no such thing as the sponsorship system and proposes an alternative way of addressing the legal framework governing MDWs’ lives in Lebanon.

The sponsorship system is one of the main elements of oppression and injustice that MDWs face in Lebanon. It binds them to one employer, denies their right freedom of movement and employment, and grants employers the freedom to treat their employees as they please.

Whether you want to know more about this system, or you already know about it but disagree with Dr. Nahas’ view, or if you simply find it an interesting perspective worth discussing, join the debate Nasawiya Cafe.
