Beware Of Appearances

“Bonne journée, bon courage et méfiez-vous des apparences.”

Found on Sine Wear Officiel’s Facebook page, the message—for all you non-Frenchies—translates to “Good day, good luck and beware of appearances”.

The caption accompanied a picture of a shadow of a mosque, created using ordinary household items. A quick comparison to a real life mosque and you can see it’s a damn good imitation.

Aesthetics aside, it’s the meaning that is truly noteworthy in this piece. Judging by appearances leads to folly, stereotyping and intolerance. Shadows say nothing about character. Just as you should never judge a book by its cover, never judge a mosque by its shadow.
