Carlos Slim Still Richest Man in the World

No surprises there.

With 73 billion dollars to his name, The Guardian reports that Lebanese-Mexican entrepreneur Carlos Slim Helú comfortably tops the list of richest people in the world, besting out Bill Gates by a gargantuan six billion.

For a brief history of how he came to be a billionaire, watch the video below courtesy of BuzzFeed. It’s worth the 1.5 minutes of your time.

According to Forbes’ World Billionaire List, Bill Gates and Amancio Ortega trail Helu in second and third place, pushing Warren Buffet to fourth place. The gross fortune of all 1,426 dollar billionaires amounts to a massive 5.4 trillion dollars, or a third of the U.S’s annual output.

The only other Arabs to make the top 100 list were Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud (#26) at $20 Billion and Mohammed Al Amoudi (#65) at $13.5 billion.

Now if only they’d invest in the rest of the Arab world.
