Twin Explosions Rock Beirut Near Iranian Embassy

At around 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday, two explosions were heard in the Jnah area of Beirut near the Iranian embassy. According to news reports, two suicide bombers – one who walked into the area on foot, and another driving a car rigged with some 100 kg of explosives – are to blame for the attack. Lebanon’s health minister says 23 people are dead and 146 wounded.

1:45 p.m.
Al-Manar TV now reporting the suicide car bomb may have been planted in a GMC car.



1:40 p.m.
The Daily Star newspaper reported that Abdullah Azzam brigades, one of Al Qaeda affiliates, was behind the double suicide attack.

1:00 p.m.
MTV News has released the names of some of the people injured in Tuesdays’ blast.

12:40 a.m.



11:21 a.m.
Amid rumors an Iranian diplomat was killed, LBCI is reporting that the Iranian embassy’s cultural adviser is among the victims of the blast.



11:20 a.m.
Reports that the blasts were set off by two suicide bombers, one on foot and one driving a car packed with a 100kg bomb.

11:00 a.m.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati tweets: “We condemn this terrorist act and consider its intention to disrupt the Lebanese situation and [an attempt] to use Lebanon as an arena to send a political message in one direction or another.”

Al-Manar now reporting 17 dead.



10:50 a.m.
Al-Manar is reporting the blasts are the result of a car bomb, identifying it as a Renault.
