Attend “Lucena/Obedience Training,” a Performance by the Zoukak Theatre Company.

Story:
Lucena is a theatrical work by Zoukak Theatre Company that questions the authoritarian model governing society, religious institutions and the theatre. The work draws from Henrik Ibsen’s historically based “Emperor and Galilean” revolving around the Roman Emperor Julian who reintroduced the gods and philosophers of ancient Greece, declaring freedom of belief and the plurality of deities. It is an exploration of old power conflicts in the heavens as on earth. It is the tale of a society whose members are on the steps of the ruling ladder linking heaven to earth. It is the story of a theatrical troupe that finds itself exiled and isolated while its members train themselves on obedience to become tame members of the society they live in.

*Lucena is a village in Cordoba (Spain) which was mostly populated by Jews. The Arab philosopher Averroes was sentenced to exile there by the caliph al-Mansur who also ordered that his books be burnt. The Hebrew origin of the name is “Eli Hochana”, which means “May God protect us”.
