Registration for Beit Chabeb Tour by Vamos Todos

From Jan 22 to Feb 7, 2014

Join Vamos Todos for a tour and a hiking trip to Beit Chabeb.

The name Beit Chabab is Syriac in origin, meaning “the house of the neighbor.”

This village has retained its traditional crafts of pottery and bell-making into the modern age. The only bell foundry in Lebanon, the craftsmen here cast the half-ton bronze bells in a single mold. The bells are usually made for Lebanon’s Christian churches, who order them to a specific pitch.

You will visit the bell factory. This traditional craft has been handed down from generation to generation in the Naffaa family. Detailed explanation of how the process is done will be generously offered to you.

Then you will stop at the pottery factory. It is a workshop led by the only craftsman in this domain, Fawzi Hanna Fakhoury. Fawzi will show you the long and tiring process of this craft. You are lucky to witness such an art before it gets extinct!

You will also see the “Maswal” (the big stone pool where the pottery mud gets soaked and cleared from pebbles), an old abandoned textile factory from the times of the Turks, and the hermitage of St. Roukoz.

All of these points of interest will be visited while you hike and walk in Beit Chabab. In this hike you will have a bit of everything. Cultural visits, hike in nature, walks among old houses and old narrow stone staircases.
