The Easiest Way to Eat Healthier: Go to Captain Cook

If you’re looking for a delicious, balanced and affordable meal downtown, look no further: Captain Cook is here. Operating since the fall of 2013, Captain Cook specializes in “super foods”—nutrient powerhouses rich in antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, and more—in other words, the healthy stuff. The dishes feature ingredients like blueberries, pomegranate, basil, flaxseeds, spinach, rosemary, and quinoa, all of which can nourish your heart, skin, blood pressure, vision, and immunity.

The menu is all-encompassing, with everything from breakfast and starters to salads, sandwiches, burgers and platters. Best part? Most items don’t go over 10,000 LL.

I sampled the Iron Claws salad (9,750 LL), which comes rich in crab, avocado, pomegranate, mango, black seeds, and the most succulent cherry tomatoes you will ever have. The salad weighs in at a mere 221 kcal.

The Gladiator (8,750 LL) is a simple Caesar salad with a thick, char-grilled chicken breast sliced neatly and arranged on a bed of crisp romaine. Swap the sauce for a homemade pesto dressing—it’s delectable.

For those whose appetites require a bit more, order the Steak Holder (10,750 LL), a soft, sesame-seed-studded submarine bun oozing with tender beef slices, melted Provolone, onions and bell peppers, generously smothered with chipotle BBQ sauce.

The Captain Burger (8,000 LL) captured our hearts, a veritable stackhouse of meat, grilled onion rings and tomato, avocado, and cheddar cheese, topped with a fried egg. Supremely filling yet surprisingly gentle on the stomach.

Waste no more: Captain Cook is your hero in all things nutritious, tasty, and cheap!
