April 23 marks the birth or death of prominent writers such as Cervantes, Shakespeare, Garcilaso de la Vega, Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla or Manuel Mejía Vallejo. That is why, this date, no matter how symbolic it is for the universal literature, has been chosen by the General Conference of the UNESCO in 1996 in order to pay global tribute to the book and to its authors, and to encourage everyone, particularly the young, to discover the pleasure of reading and respect the irreplaceable contribution of the creators to the social and cultural progress.

This year, the EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) joins this initiative. Established in 2011, the EUNIC network in Lebanon aims at promoting the European values and the cultural exchanges between the European Union and Lebanon.

These activities will take place in the framework of the National Week of Reading organized by the Ministry of Culture of Lebanon.
