There is in Shakespeare’s work both ordinary and extraordinary racism around the character of Othello. Ordinary racism comes in the form of referring to him as “the stranger from over there,” as in “the Moor of Venice.” This racism is the prerogative of landowners, who reserve the right to enjoy objects of desire. But there is another extraordinary racism, which is to say that Othello is “the stranger from everywhere.” Chaos everywhere, and the one main rule is “Make money”.
