Jebebara Unity Drum Workshop at Radio Beirut

Wednesday, Aug 13, 2014
6:00pm -> 8:30pm
Radio Beirut

After an incredible performance of soul-driven percussion rhythms at Radio Beirut just a few months ago, Jebebara Unity Drum is back again.

Traditional Mandeng, West-African rhythms from Senegal, Guinea and Mali are the driving force behind Jebebara. Get ready for some hard-hitting Djembe and Dunun action – these guys beat with full force power, until blood seeps from their hands.

The expression, ‘Jebebara’, comes from the Bamana people of Mali and translates roughly to “unity drum” or “drum of ceremony”. The meaning or significance of this expression is that the drum is what brings people together but it is there for everyone.

Without the community the music does not happen – without the cause for celebration and the dancers the rhythm is meaningless. It was in this way that he expressed that the root of the djembe was a celebration of unity. Not ego, competition or division. It is with that spirit that you are invited to come and join Radio Beirut in learning this truly rich musical tradition.
