Photography as Propaganda: The War Photographyof Khalil Raad

Thursday, Oct 2, 2014
11:00am -> 1:00pm
American University of Beirut (AUB)

The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI)’s Palestinian Oral History Archive cordially invites you to a public lecture with Salim Tamari.

Raad’s photographic work in the ranks of the Ottoman fighting forces, although intended as a propaganda campaign for Jamal Pasha’s strategy may seem today as a naive defense of a lost cause. At the time however, Raad’s work carried a great deal of credibility and conviction. He believed that the Committee of Union and Progress was fighting for the unity of the homeland against the British and French invaders. The Ottoman soldiers, Turks, Arabs, and Bulgarians were his soldiers, and Sinai and Beersheba fronts were his frontiers.

Salim Tamari is the editor of Jerusalem Quarterly and Hawliyyat al Quds, professor of sociology at Birzeit University and an adjunct professor at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University.
