Twenty Four Things I’ve Learned At the Age of 24

My 25th birthday is a few months away, that is halfway to 50 years old – all I’ve really accomplished is giving fake-birth to my dog and tricking my body into accepting tequila as a nutritious alternative to water.

But, I have learned a few things along the way, and since it’s easier to list 24 things I’ve learned instead of 25… here we go.

1. The world doesn’t owe you anything, don’t act like it does.

2. Knowing and loving yourself comes before knowing and loving someone else.

3. Sometimes, there is a thrill in staying in and watching TV with your dog on a Friday night. But you should probably do other stuff too.

4. Let yourself fall in love, it’s worth the risk. But when you fall out of love, don’t read old text messages.

5. Your close friends are worth the extra work as you grow older.

6. Spending time with your parents is not only necessary, but fun too.

7. It’s time to loosen the purse strings when it comes to alcohol. If you’re going to drink, do it well.

8. If you center your happiness around another person, you’ll never be truly happy.

9. Social media can be fun, but hold off on that fourth outfit of the day post. Nobody really cares.

10. It won’t matter what you decide to major in, as long as you do it well.

11. The easiest way to get someone to shut up, is to start talking about your menstrual cycle.

12. Enjoy your body while you can. It’s good to you, be good to it.

13. When facing the choice of being kind or being right, choose being kind.

14. Supporting yourself is the biggest reward.

15. Get your dating a bad boy/bad girl phase out of the way before you hit 25.

16. Stop being a doormat to anyone or anything.

17. Learn how to apologize when you’re wrong.

18. There’s plenty of time to find the one and even more time to get married. Stop acting like you have an expiration date.

19. Care more about how you feel than how you look.

20. Don’t live in the past or the future, neither of them exists.

21. Getting blackout drunk lost its charm after sophomore year. Adapt.

22. Seek as little approval from society as possible; they won’t be around on your deathbed.

23. If more than one of your roommates has been horrible, you’re the horrible roommate.

24. The things you worry obsessively about will most likely never happen; worse things probably will – but you’ll get through them.
