‘Women Without Men’ Screening at AUB

Wednesday, Nov 5, 2014
6:30pm -> 9:30pm
American University of Beirut (AUB)

Organized by the Department of Fine Arts and Art History, as part of the AUB Visiting Scholar program, this will be a public screening by award-winning Iranian filmmaker/artist Shirin Neshat.

Neshat’s early photographic works includes the Women of Allah (1993–97) series, which explored the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works departed from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and narratives. Neshat has held numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums internationally.

Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion Award, “Best Director” in the 66th Venice International Film Festival in 2009. She is currently working on her second feature length film, based on the life and art of the legendary Egyptian singer “Oum Kolthum.”

An interview with Carol Mansour (award winning documentary filmmaker and founder of Forward Film Productions, LB) will follow.
