IFI’s Climate Change and Environment in the Arab World Program cordially invites you to the lecture, “China’s ‘Going Out’: Transnational Intersections of Food, Energy and Urban Development.” The lecture is by Dr. Jia-Ching Chen, Visiting Scholar in Sociology at Brown University and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Academia Sinica.
China is undergoing a process of urbanization that is unprecedented in speed and scale. This state-led process entails a cascading series of transformations to China’s rural landscapes that also shape places as far flung as France, the American Southwest, Brazil, and Angola. Beginning with a look at China’s policies and planning practices, this talk will trace links between new efforts at sustainable development and the global geographies of food, energy, and urban development.
