‘Interzone’ at IRTIJAL ’15 International Festival of Experimental Music in Lebanon

Founded in 2000, Irtijal is presently the oldest music festival of the city of Beirut, and one of the longest standing international festivals of post-war Lebanon. Irtijal is organized by MILL, a non-profit association founded in 2000 by musicians Mazen Kerbaj and Sharif Sehnaoui, with the intent of promoting contemporary and experimental practices in music, and assisting projects that do not fit within the Lebanese mainstream, yet still present undeniable artistic value.

Born in Saint-Étienne, France, Serge Teyssot-Gay gained prominence as the guitar player of Noir Désir, one of the most famous French rock bands of the 90’s and 2000’s. Following the dissolution of Noir Désir in 2010, he became active with trio “Zone Libre” (with guitar player Marc Sens and drummer Cyril Bilbeaud), and duo “Interzone” (with Syrian oud player Khaled Al-Jaramani). Teyssot-Gay has also set literary texts to music, working with the writings of Georges Hyvernaud, Lydie Salvayre, Bernard Wallet, Attila József, Stig Dagerman, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Allen Ginsberg, Krzysztof Styczynski and Michel Bulteau, among others. He has worked with French painter Paul Bloas on a performance for painting and guitar entitled “Ligne de Front”, and with double bass player Joëlle Léandre since January 2012.

After graduating from the National Conservatory of Damascus, Khaled Al-Jaramani joined the National Symphony Orchestra of Syria, where he quickly distinguished himself as a talented soloist. In 2002, following a concert by French rock band Noir Désir in Damascus, he started collaborating with guitar player Serge Teyssot-Gay, which in turn gave birth to the “Interzone” project.
