‘Critical Writing on Design’ at Beirut Design Week 2015

From Jun 1 to Jun 4, 2015
2:00pm -> 5:00pm
Beirut Design Week 2015

MENA Design Research Center

Beirut Design Week is held annually in June across Beirut city, featuring exhibitions, conferences, workshops and open studios showcasing the work of local and international designers operating within Lebanon. The event focuses on creative economies, intercultural exchange, design education and design entrepreneurship.

Beirut Design Week is organized by the MENA Design Research Center, a non-profit organization co-founded by Doreen Toutikan and Maya Karanouh. The Center is focused on promoting a diverse understanding of design through the implementation of design research and collaborative multidisciplinary projects in the region.

This workshop will take over 4 days including 2 days in the BDW2015 international conference, which will result in a publication that will be delivered by participants at the end of the week. Learn how to write, edit and talk about design in this unique workshop by Design critic, curator and educator Hala Abdel Malak. Using a relevant hands on approach, we will develop a blog to cover Beirut Design Week and consequently various pieces of online journalism about design: interviews, short posts, longer essays, photos, profiles and whatever is needed to populate with relevant information that can appeal to a wide audience. Learn how to ask critical questions, research and write and edit each other’s work while working on a short deadline. You will be asked to cover the BDW, attend talks and meet designers. Participants are required to be fluent in English.
