8:30pm -> 12:30am

Masrah El Medina Presents, Bassam Saba: Nay, Western and Traditional Flutes, Oud
with April Centrone: Arabic and World Percussion

The concert is a celebration of Arab music culture, featuring one of its finest masters, Bassam Saba. Saba is a world-renowned Nay virtuoso, Flutist and Multi-instrumentalist. The evening will feature Saba’s original compositions upon the Nay, Flutes and Oud, and music from the traditional-classical Arabic repertoire.

Originally from Troblos, Saba grew up in a musical family where he played Nay, Oud and Violin with his father and brothers. Saba later studied these traditional instruments as a teenager in Beirut, then left to study Flute in Paris and Moscow. Saba toured extensively with Marcel Khalife and Fairouz as the principle Nay player and Flutist, and in New York performed alongside Simon Shaheen for over 20 years. Saba has performed as a soloist for the Hannover Philharmonic (Germany), Qatar Philharmonic, and L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Liban, among others.

Saba is renowned for his rare Arabic music expression upon western flute, as well as his skills upon the nay which transcend the original instrument. Saba is equally renowned as an educator of Arabic music, and one of the principle sources of Arabic Music Education in the West.

While Saba pushes the borders of the traditional, he remains true to the old music and taqasim, bringing us the authentic sound our ears, hearts and souls crave, the tarab we respond to from deep in our bones, the performance we can never forget.
