‘Mouvement et Matière’ Exhibition

Mark Hachem Gallery presents the exhibition « Mouvement et Matière » of the French sculptor Mauro CORDA, from September 29th to October 14th . The city of Beirut opens its doors to the work of the artist, whose aesthetic of construction and deconstruction finds a correspondence with the very spirit of the Lebanese capital in constant evolution.

Movement and matter, two cherished themes in Corda’s production, are unified in the presentation of two recurrent subject of his oeuvre: remnants and gymnasts, the former representing images of decay and suffering, the latter celebrating movement by pushing it to its limit. Life and death, creation and destruction find a communion: while monumental ruins remind us of the fragility of physical forms, the extreme poses of the gymnasts celebrate the liveliness and boundless power of bodily movement, through a peaceful and confident aesthetic. Such a semantic duality finds a correspondence in the technique, which ranges from a classical to a more contemporary approach.

We are confronted with a spectacle of impeccable corporeal shapes, respecting the classical canon of balance and proportion: the sinuous silhouettes convey a sense of harmony through their exquisite symmetry. Such a masterful technique does not fall into the trap of standardization, as a subtle irony often expresses an innate originality. Matter is the vehicle through which the incongruity of humanity is expressed: bronze, iron, marble, stainless steel, resin, aluminum… All those different materials interact in perfect harmony, reconciling any intellectual and physical conflict. Combining visions of dynamism and deterioration with the canons adhered to by the great masters of Antiquity and the Renaissance, the artist pursues a contemporary ideal of beauty.
