Unmasking Mental Illness: Breaking the Stigma

Wednesday, Nov 11, 2015
6:00pm -> 8:00pm
American University of Beirut (AUB)

The Psychology Student Society, in collaboration with Embrace, is glad to present its first event for the semester under the title “Unmasking Mental Illness: Breaking the Stigma.”

Four brave speakers will reveal their stories about growing up with mental illness in Beirut. In a society where mental illness is shamed, frowned upon, and is considered a taboo, we organize this event as a step towards breaking the stigma that has always clouded the public’s vision of psychological disorders.

There will be a discussion about various disorders including OCD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Anorexia, and, in addition, some of the speakers will be talking about their experience with suicide.

Away from judgments, stereotypes, and shaming, we will provide a safe space to discuss what mental illness is really about and how it feels to have a stigmatized mental illness in a society that condemns.

A Q&A session will follow, so be prepared, be many, and help break the stigma.

Location: West Hall
