Location: Issam Fares Institute – Conference Room

Professor Zafiris Tzannatos, a former Chair of the Economics Department at AUB, has held senior academic and research appointments in Europe, leadership and managerial posts at international organizations, and advisory positions in Arab governments. He is currently a Fellow at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, Beirut.

Abstract
Professor Zafiris Tzannatos’ talk will focus on the economic, social and political conditions that applied at the time of the 2011 Arab Uprisings as a result of the reforms introduced in the 1990s, with a special focus on wealth and poverty disparities. Both in the Arab region and other parts of the world, broadly speaking, the majority of workers and citizens have been losing out over time, while the prospects for both youth and adults have deteriorated. These realities provide lessons for future policies that would lead to a “new new social contract”, one that would replace both the remaining but outdated elements from the old statist contract since the 1950s-1960s and the partially articulated economic policies that were included in the new pro-market social contract introduced in the 1990s
