Master Class on Filmmaking with Joshua Oppenheimer

Sunday, Sep 25, 2016
5:00pm -> 6:30pm
Metropolis Empire Sofil

In a cinematographic journey lasting over 10 years, Joshua Oppenheimer produced the Oscar-nominated documentaries, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. This monumental diptych has been hailed as ‘a new form of cinematic surrealism’ and a ‘documentary of the imagination’. The two films have broken 50 years of silence around Indonesia’s 1965-66 genocide, exposing a regime built on fear and intimidation, and transforming the way a nation understands its history. In this unmissable masterclass, Oppenheimer discusses his groundbreaking methods, including his use of performance, collaboration, and intervention as ways of making visible the role of fiction in non-fiction, and the role of fantasy in reality. He also reflects on the impact of his films in Indonesia and around the world.
