Embroidery workshop for children by Studio Kawakeb

In this workshop session, the wooden sifter is perceived in its entirety, and not as a flat surface on which to embroider. Participants will be asked to transform a daily object, one that has lost its functionality in our generation’s daily lives, into an embroidered piece that exhibits their sense of aesthetic through time and labor. The materials that the participants will be choosing from to embellish their wooden sifters are different non-precious objects and pieces selected from local embroidery shops to reflect the popular use of embroidery. Participants will be introduced to different embroidery techniques, the different ways they could use the material, and the different methods of embellishment.
This workshop is the second of a series of three workshops by Studio Kawakeb that focus on using the same object, a wooden sifter, in three different ways, changing the functionality of this object. Participants will be asked to alter this forgotten object from our cuisine by using threads and other materials to re-imagine it in other contexts.The three workshop sessions focus on three different themes related to embroidery, which are: connect, embellish, hide/reveal.

About Studio Kawakeb
Studio Kawakeb is a visual arts studio based in Beirut and incubated by Beit WARAQ, where they are constantly in contact with other artists and individuals working in the field. The studio was founded in 2015 with the aim of pushing creative boundaries to contribute to a local and regional visual exploration in the fields of illustration, animation and graphic design. Having acquired a set of skills in these practices, the team is also commissioned to give specialized workshops in the region.
