The high level United Nations General Assembly Summit for Refugees and Migrants held on September 19th brought together Member States to address large movements of Refugees and Migrants. The Summit aimed to strengthen governance of international migration and presented a unique opportunity for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.

The insufficient international support strained national capacities, and depleting resources continue to worsen conditions both for refugee populations and host communities in Lebanon. The Delegation from Lebanon aimed to reaffirm its position regarding three major concerns: the equitable International “burden-sharing” and responsibility-sharing with host countries which will allow them to address the economic, social-environmental and security challenges they are facing, the right of refugees to return to their Homeland, and the indispensable international community assistance to host countries.

The Refugee Research and Policy Program at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs is organizing a discussion in the aftermath of the high-level meeting to provide insight and perspective on proceedings of the summit.
