‘Sonita’ (Sundance 2016 Grand Jury Prize) – Screening at Station

Tuesday, Oct 25, 2016
8:30pm -> 11:30pm
Station Beirut

About the movie
Sonita would’ve preferred to be the daughter of Rihanna and Michael Jackson rather than an undocumented Afghan refugee in Iran. But she’s not one to be discouraged. A feisty, spirited, young woman who fights to live the way she wants, as an artist, singer and musician, in spite of all the obstacles she confronts in Iran and her conservative patriarchal family. The main storyline of the film builds around Sonita’s struggle to escape a forced marriage. She doesn’t care that her family wishes to sell her as a wife or that women are banned from singing. One day she will record a rap album.

A panel discussion with Zeina Daccache (Catharsis), Hanane Hajj Ali (actress) and Jana Saleh (music producer) will take place after the screening.
