Embroidery workshop for families and children aged 12 years and above

In this workshop session, the wooden sifters will be used as a double-sided transparent sheet. Participants will be asked to think of the duality of their designs, and to think of their object as having two separate faces that are going to be connected by thread. They will be shaping the experience of the viewer who will be seeing their final object by choosing to reveal or hide certain threads, to create certain shapes that are only visible once viewed from a specific angle, and to think about the time that the viewer will spend with their object and the different layers that they want to convey. Participants will be introduced to different embroidery techniques, the different ways they can weave their wooden sifters and keep the design similar on both sides, and the different ways they can create two completely different designs on each face of their objects.
This workshop is the third and last of a series of three workshops by Studio Kawakeb that focus on using the same object, a wooden sifter, in three different ways, changing the functionality of this object. Participants will be asked to alter this forgotten object from our cuisine by using threads and other materials to re-imagine it in other contexts.The three workshop sessions focus on three different themes related to embroidery, which are: connect, embellish, hide/reveal.

About Studio Kawakeb
Studio Kawakeb is a visual arts studio based in Beirut and incubated by Beit WARAQ, where they are constantly in contact with other artists and individuals working in the field. The studio was founded in 2015 with the aim of pushing creative boundaries to contribute to a local and regional visual exploration in the fields of illustration, animation and graphic design. Having acquired a set of skills in these practices, the team is also commissioned to give specialized workshops in the region.
