About 25 million adolescents live in Egypt. 'Fruehlings Erwachen' (Spring Awakening) is a story of and by adolescents from Egypt, who, between curiosity and pain, are trying to find out what growing up is all about. The original play, written in 1891 by the German dramatist Frank Wedekind, was adapted by the director Laila Soliman. Basing her script on interviews and workshops with adolescents from various regions of Egypt, she created a play between life- experience and fiction. It follows their daily life and their feelings, and revolves around their issues and claims, where religious doubts or believes and social conditions are as much an inherent part of their world as the flowery ringing tones from Egyptian love songs sounding from their mobiles. What you can find in biology books under 'puberty' rarely has anything to do with the own personal experience of growing up. In connection with this theater project the director and the dramatist offer a workshop for students age 15 – 18 in which the subject matter of the play will be further dealt with.
