The seventeen year-old Hallam Foe is an unusual teenager who misses his mother, who committed suicide, drowning in a lake nearby their house in Edinburgh after an overdose. After a heated discussion with his father Julius Foe about his new stepmother, Hallam runs away from home and travels to Edinburgh, the capital city. In the process of dealing with his devastating loss, young Hallam avoids contact with other humans and instead spies on his neighbors from his rooftop window. This film engages in a beautiful way with the challenges of growing up and being lonely in a city full of people. Hallam’s perspective offers the viewer an insight into the complex mind of a teenager suffering from loss and disconnect. We join Hallam on his journey towards maturity.
The film, based on the novel by Peter Jinks, is accompanied by an animated title sequence designed by visual artist David Shrigley, one of Scotland’s most successful and popular contemporary artists. Shrigley also did all the drawings and writing in Hallam’s dieries. Hallam Foe won at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007.
