Bold and Bolted: Your Must-Have Summer Accessory is Waiting at Rue Des Demoiselles

The French director Robert Bresson’s declaration that “an old thing becomes new if you detach it from what usually surrounds it” proves all the more true for local jewelry business Rue Des Demoiselles, which transforms run-of-the-mill hardware bolts into elegant and edgy accessories.

In 2011, Karma Osman, a fashion-lover and business administration student at AUB launched the line. She was just 16-years-old at the time. Now, four years later, her business has blossomed across the international marketplace. Osman has sold her unique handmade pieces to customers in San Francisco, Florida, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Dubai and Doha.

“I like working with bolts because they are practical, come in difference sizes and have shapes that can be played around with to diminish their rough impression,” Osman tells Beirut.com. The designer shared with us some of her favorite pieces. Take a look:

Bariah is the star of Osman’s second collection, A Pocketful of Sunshine, which adds splashes of colored threads to the basic bolt-jewelry design.

Karma, a piece from Osman’s Winter Wonderland collection, is a dynamic, layered line of accessories made with stainless steel bolts and silver chains, meant to mimic the shape of a snowflake.

Pieces can take up to two hours to make depending on their designs, but Osman makes the best of the experience – she’ll often take her crafting tools, toolbox and pliers with her from the beach to the football field at AUB.

Ghina, a classic anklet, comes in a variety of colors and here’s a special secret from us to you: it’s kind of the most perfect summer accessory you could own. Just sayin’.

Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, be it from bolts to sketches, street architecture and even waves, Osman says her goal is to “help people see the beauty in things that surround them, no matter how mundane they may seem.”

Rue Des Demoiselles merchandise can be found on Raghunter and purchased at the AUB Museum Gift Shop. Find out more on Facebook and check out more from the Rue line on Instagram.
