Could Things Get Any Worse? Beirut is Overflowing With Garbage

Garbage is piling up on the streets of Beirut after Sukleen said its company can’t take any more waste to the Naameh landfill.

The landfill was slated to close on July 17. Since then, residents of Naameh and nearby villages have prevented trucks from reaching it to unload trash.

Environment Minister Mohammed al-Mashnouq vowed on Tuesday to resolve the waste management problem.

Meanwhile, the trash continues to pile up as workers spray them with white powder to knock back the smell. Here’s a look at photos from around Beirut showing just how bad the situation has become.
