Four Annoying Things That Happen In A Lebanese Village

We always hear our parents and grandparents say that there’s nothing better than spending a weekend in the mountains. Now, I admit that going there does relax me after a week of noise and pollution of Beirut, but it can also be maddening. Aside from the fact that most of the time you have no internet and feel like you’re cut off from civilization, there are other factors that make the mountains problematic for those who prefer the city. Here are four annoying things that tend happen in the mountains.

1) The animals

You know how people think the mountains makes you feel comfortable and peaceful? Well, that’s not entirely true. Waking up to the sound of a rooster who won’t shut up in one of the most horrible things I’ve ever experienced. Also, if you live in an area where there is a lot of green, you might find other species that annoy you, like birds and possibly tons of crickets.

2) The gossiping

Admit it, we all enjoy hearing stories about people we don’t know because we’re nosy as hell. However, there’s only so much you can take in a jabali gossiping session. At one point, you’ll start wondering what you’re doing with your life and more importantly, how your relatives have managed to survive this long while living in this he said/she said world.

3) Hearing the same stories over and over

“When you were a kid, you used to read the word “Mat3am Farooj” in arabic as “Mat3am Frog.” Yes taunt, I know that; you’ve told this story to all creatures great and small for the past 25 years of my life. Thank you.

4) Your old friends

Seeing the people you grew up with, or played with at some point when you were a kid, all grown up can be traumatizing. Can you imagine the look on my face when I found out that the girl I used to play with, four years my junior, now has two kids of her own?
