1. Atel
What it actually means:
Death: noun, the action of dying or being killed, the end of the life of a living organism
What it means to Lebanese people:
Adjective, used to describe an extremely amazing thing, can be attributed to persons and inanimate objects
How to use it in a sentence:
example: Bro kenet l sahra ktir atel mberih
Translation: Bro the party last night was crazy
2. Khaze2
What it actually means:
Tear: verb, to pull something apart with force, Noun, a hole or split in something caused by having it pulled forcefully.
What it means to Lebanese people:
Adjective, of very high quality or standard, pleasing the senses and mind
How to use it in a sentence:
example:
A: Sme3et mberih l album l jdeed?
B: Eh ktir khaze2
Translation:
A: Did you hear the album yesterday?
B: Yes, it was very entertaining
3. Moukhife/Khof
What it actually means:
Fear: noun, an emotion associated with harm, pain, or danger
What it means to Lebanese people:
Adjective, consisting of or having excellent qualities assets or qualities
How to use it in a sentence:
example: Ktir moukhife kenet ekher episode
Translation: The latest episode was excellent
4. Tabashna
What it actually means:
Fall: verb, to lose one’s balance and collapse
What it means to Lebanese people:
Verb, to be ineffective in attaining one’s goal
How to use it in a sentence:
example: Tabashna l exam
Translation: We failed the exam
5. Bsheel/Btenshel/Byenshel
What it actually means:
Remove: verb, to take away or off something
What it means to Lebanese people:
Verb, say that one will do something which has been suggested by another person
Adjective, used to describe someone one is physically attracted to
How to use it in a sentence:
example 1:
A: Betrouhe ma3e nehdar movies?
B: Eh bsheel
example 2: Ouf shu byenshel hayda li lebes abyad
Translation 1:
A: Would you like to go with me to the movies?
B: Yes, I much very would like to
Translation 2: God, the guy in white is very good-looking
6. Akal
What it actually means:
Eat: verb, the act of putting things into the mouth, then chewing and swallowing it.
What it means to Lebanese people:
Noun, the accomplishment of an aim or purpose
How to use it in a sentence:
example: Akal ma3e l film
Translation: Everyone believed the story I told them
7. Wozze
What it actually means:
Doesn’t really have a definition, Lebanese people tend to create their own words sometimes.
What it means to Lebanese people:
Adjective, used to describe a person/place/ thing of weird nature or appearance.
How to use it in a sentence:
example: Ma bade rouh 3a hal mahal, ktir wozze
Translation: I don’t want to go to this place, it’s weird
