Growing up in Lebanon comes with a lot of benefits, but it also has a lot of scary aspects to it. There are certain scare tactics that all our parents used to scare us straight, and we will forever remember them.
1. Abou Kees
This mysterious monster was used by our parents to make us go to bed early, eat our vegetables, and not run away from them in public places. But why was he Abou Kees, of all things? What’s so scary about plastic bags?
2. Being thrown under the bridge
If you didn’t mind your parents, you’ll be thrown under the bridge to sell gum. If you don’t pay attention to school and study well, you’ll be thrown under the bridge to sell gum. If you don’t do exactly as you’re told, you’ll be thrown under the bridge to sell gum. This was borderline abusive, no?
3. Watermelon seeds
If you swallow watermelon seeds, you will grow a tree out of your belly button and die. Why were they so against watermelon seeds?
4. Your head is heavy AF
If you lean over a balcony, you will die because your head is heavier than your entire body. What kind of science?
5. Sitting too close to the TV = blindness
If you sit too close to the TV, you will lose your sight and have to walk the streets not knowing where you are. It was ultra-dramatic and completely unnecessary.
6. Lying is death
If you lie, a God will descend from the heavens at night and choke you with rope made from fire. No part of this made any sense but it was terrifying nonetheless.
7. Crossing Your Eyes
If you cross your eyes, you will forever remain cross-eyed. Suuure.
8. Going out in the cold
If you go out in the cold, your facial nerves will be so shocked that your face will get stuck to one side and never return to normal.
9. Pepsi is cancer
If you drank Pepsi/Cola without your parents adding water to it and without waiting for all the bubbles to disappear, you will get cancer. Scientifically speaking.
