UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Ben Stiller and activist Susan Sarandon briefly landed in Beirut yesterday for a special film screening of
Soufra at
Beirut Digital District. Oscar-nominated Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki accompanied the pair during the event that was hosted to share the inspiring story of
Soufra with friends and supporters in Beirut.
Soufra was produced by Susan Sarandon and directed by Thomas Morgan, and gained international recognition after making the rounds at festivals around the world.
The film revolves around Mariam Shaar, a generational refugee woman who set out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company,
Soufra, and then expanding it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee woman who now share this camp as their home.
Philanthropic organization Al Fanar has backed social entrepreneur Mariam Al Shaar and helped her launch the first food truck wholly owned and run by women refugees in Lebanon. This is a great initiative that not only titillates our taste buds but also offers a sustainable living for these women.
As part of Souk El Tayeb and in collaboration with the Women’s Program Association in Burj el Barajneh camp, Soufra is the continuation of the “Falastine 100%” project and targets Palestinian women, teaching them the art of
mouneh as an income generating activity.
