Metropolis Cinema Facing Possible Shutdown, Launches First Fundraising Campaign

The Metropolis Art Cinema Association in Beirut took to their social media yesterday to announce that they’re launching their very first fundraising campaign, amidst pressing financial issues and budget cuts.

The crowdfunding campaign features an open-air cine-concert German classic Variety, happening on Tuesday, October 1st on the Sursock Museum esplanade. This event will be closing the 6th edition of German Film Week 2019 in Beirut.

Cinephiles and fans of Metropolis can book their tickets and donate via Ihjoz. All profits will go to the Metropolis Cinema Association to help keep it afloat till 2020, after which they aim to take the first steps towards becoming financially independent and owning their own venue.

The team wrote: “We thank you for having been on our side for the last 13 years and ask for your support to survive this difficult period.”

Created in 2006, The Metropolis Art Cinema Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting independent cinema in Lebanon and the MENA region through diverse programming, industry training, young audience outreach, and preservation of film heritage in order to allow for greater accessibility to alternative films locally and regionally.

Over the years, Metropolis has hosted over 160 film festivals, screened over 2000 film screenings, and released almost 1000 Lebanese productions.
