Judge Asks That 10 Ministers Be Investigated Over August 4 Blast

The lead investigator in the case of the August 4th Beirut explosion Judge Fadi Sawan has asked parliament to investigate 10 former ministers including those of justice, finance, and public works.

Ministers Youssef Finianos, Ghazi Aridi, Ghazi Wazni, Marie Claude Najem, Albert Serhan, Achraf Rifi, Salim Jreissati, Ali Hassan Khalil, Michel Najjar, Ghazi Zaiter are all names that are to be investigated.

The Lebanese Parliament has a specialized court that is supposed to hold heads of state to account, and two thirds of MPs must vote in favor of initiating such proceedings. Considering the fact that Lebanese ministers are all politically backed, with their parties making up the majority of the parliament, they ultimately still have enough votes to block the investigation.

So far, the 33 people charged and 25 arrested in relation to the Beirut blast are mainly low to mid ranking officials, as well as the head of customs. No politician has been investigated as of yet, despite them having known all along that dangerous materials were held at the port.

The families of the victims are being represented by Beirut Bar Association and Legal Agenda. Just yesterday, they held a protest in front of parliament asking for answers.

Judge Sawan is expected to release his indictment soon.
