AUB Sets Dollar Rate At 3,900 LL For Tuition Fees

The American University of Beirut has officially priced its dollar rate at 3,900 LL for tuition fees in accordance with Banque du Liban’s electronic exchange platform rate.

The decision was announced earlier today by President Dr. Fadlo Khuri, citing the economic collapse and the university’s financial survival, and will be effective as of Spring 2021 semester.

This will effectively lead to a sharp increase in tuition fees, making private higher education even more inaccessible for many in Lebanon.

While this piece of news did not come as shocking, it is certainly disturbing as it endangers the future of students who will no longer be able to pursue a degree locally, nor abroad due to the de facto measures locking up their money in the banks.

The final option is public education, which cannot uphold a large influx of students and is also a victim of the ruling class’ negligence.

These are scary times for Lebanon as the crisis has begun to take a toll on the education of those meant to be the future.
