LAU Medical Students Protest Against University’s 3,900 LL Dollar Rate

Earlier today, LAU medical students organized a protest at LAU Medical Center – Rizk Hospital against the university’s recent decision to adopt the 3,900 LL dollar rate for tuitions, in accordance with Banque du Liban’s electronic exchange platform rate.

This decision will be effective as of Spring 2021 and will increase tuition fees by more than 160% – a crazy hike in pricing considering that wages in Lebanon are still given at the 1,500 LL rate.

Medical students who have already spent thousands of dollars on their education so far may not be able to go on with their studies, throwing their money and hard work away.

Both LAU and AUB had announced their decision to implement the 3,900 LL dollar rate last week, causing outrage amongst students and making private higher education even more inaccessible to many. Other schools are also expected to follow suit, though no formal decisions have been released as of yet.

Meanwhile, students are forced to pay the price, with many now unable to study here due to this new policy, and unable to study abroad due to bank restrictions on their deposits.

It’s frightening to think about the future of education in Lebanon, and how this will play out.
