Disturbing Image Of Handcuffed Child Goes Viral On Social Media
Last night, a disturbing image of a handcuffed child accompanied by Internal Security Forces (ISF) at the Palace of Justice went viral on social media.
The image evoked outrage and criticism among social media users and activists, who were appalled at how a child was treated.
Not only is handcuffing a minor illegal by international human rights standards, it is also traumatizing for the kid, who has surely not committed half of what our ruling class has done over the years.
The ISF later released a statement on the image explaining that:
– The child doesn’t have issued identification papers and is suspected of committing several theft crimes, last of which was stealing a motorbike.
– He had attempted to escape while being brought to the Palace of Justice, and he told the judge he won’t hesitate to flee again.
– There are no instructions in the Lebanese law that touch on handcuffing minors as they could try to run and endanger themselves and others.
– Minors in juvenile prison are treated in accordance with human rights standards, in cooperation with NGOs, and are rehabilitated to rejoin society.
This triggering sight is something we would like to see with those responsible for the August 4 blast, not a 10 year old child.
