18 Things You’ll Understand If You’re Queer In Beirut

While all queer experiences cannot possibly be identical, here’s a glimpse at some shared ones in honour of Pride Month 2021.

Sending all the love and support to our queer families in Lebanon!

1. You constantly code-switch depending on the crowd

The ultra-queer within is unravelled in front of your closest friends.

2. Having a scarily accurate gaydar

It’s the vibes, you know? You can just tell.

3. You make a mental note of which businesses hang the LGBTQ+ flag during Pride Week

Just gonna casually make them our new favourite spots.

4. You’re not sure if you’ll ever attend Pride Beirut

It always gets cancelled.

5. You had or have homophobic friends

Best thing you can do is cut ties so they don’t mess up your energy…even if means cutting off your cousin.

6. You have at least one “gay” item in your room

It could be a cactus, lava lamp, or even a rainbow-coloured item.

7. You’ve asked someone if they listen to girl in red

If you know, you know.

8. You’re quick to understand that furry friends are family too

9. Family gatherings really test your self-control

*You can’t slap grandma, you can’t slap grandma…*

10. You have a total of…maybe three clubs to go to

While more and more places are becoming queer friendly in Beirut, you’re ultimately bound to 2.5 clubs you can attend.

11. You’re bound to run into your ex every weekend

See point #10. You will run into your ex every single weekend, there’s just no avoiding it.

12. You can recognize a queer person by your mutuals on Instagram

4 to 10 mutuals means they’re an ally at the very least.

13. You have attended/performed at storytelling events

We love chatting.

14. You’ve had at least one rainbow cake in your life

It’s in the rule book, you have to have one.

15. At some point or another, you’ll have to take your hetero friend out for post-break up dancing.

16. You’ll always have Bardo

17. Every single victory that has to do with queer rights and gender equality makes your heart burst

It’s also a great way for you to find out who amongst your Facebook friends is homophobic…

18. You have a community that makes you feel loved for who you really are

And we’d like to think of ourselves as part of that community <3.
